DESCRIPTION:Let’s WANCE again!! No\, that’s not a typo\, it’s a combination of walking and freestyle dancing that is stress-busting\, friendship-building\, creative\, healthy and inspiring. \nThis event is organized through Finding Female Friends > 50 (I’m the volunteer chapter lead for the DC area) but women below 50 are also cordially invited! \nWe collaborate on our favorite songs for the playlist\, walk and talk together and just move our bodies any way we want. “It’s so liberating!” as one of the participants said last time. \nWANCE began in the Midwest during the pandemic and we were excited to bring it to Washington DC. DESCRIPTION:It’s hidden in a private area of the body. But it’s so important to our quality of life\, in the bathroom\, bedroom and beyond! \nLet’s reduce or even stop leaks and other issues by getting to know and care for our dear pelvic floor in this lighthearted but impactful 1-hour workshop. \nPlease fill out my quick waiver and questionnaire (click here) when signing up. It mentions donations but they are truly optional. I appreciate anyone who attends\, donation or no! ? \nWe’ll practice together: \n– Breathing in a way that nourishes these often-tight muscles\, and as an extra bonus\, it also helps with posture and back pain! \n– Tuning in and sending care and appreciation to this neglected body part. \n– Doing Kegel exercises in an optimal way (most people’s technique is a bit off). \n– Bracing the pelvic floor\, which helps stop leaks and protects us when lifting a bag of mulch or a child 🙂 \n– Adding an inner-thigh squeeze to strengthen the pelvic floor (bring a cushion or soft ball if you have one!) \nPlus I’ll sing my “Pelvic Name Game” song at the end! \nWhat to bring: Please have a squishy ball or cushion that you can squeeze between your thighs. \nEven though I’m in the health/fitness field\, I didn’t know how to train my pelvic floor effectively (except “do Kegels”?) until June 2023. But I was so happy to learn I was wrong!\n\nPosture is alignment of our bones and joints\, and it gets tricky because our muscles and fascia (connective tissue) become tight from sitting and other habits.\n\nIn this 55-minute workshop\, you’ll learn a set of simple but often-neglected stretches and exercises that can create noticeable improvements in posture over time!\n\nDoing these for just minutes a day can help you stand taller\, ease tension\, help avoid pain and injury\, and even look more confident!\n\nOf course this workshop does not provide diagnoses or medical advice\, just self-care measures you can use daily to improve posture.\nRegistration is not required; you just need to pay for entry into the rec center. SUMMARY:How to Reduce Low Back Pain at Home: Zoom Workshop with Guest Trainer!
DESCRIPTION:Our low back takes the brunt of stress over time from stiffness and weakness from other joints like the shoulders and hips \nBut the good news is that chronic low back pain does not always mean we need medical treatments like cortisone shots\, surgeries or other medications. You can start reducing back pain\, freeing up your joints and moving better with exercises right in the comfort of your own home! \nJoin me for this event and learn how\, from Michelle Richards\, a highly experienced personal trainer (in person and online) and a movement coach who specializes in teaching people how to move pain-free\, especially women over 50. \nOne of my health coaching clients\, a woman over 50\, told me that her sessions with Michelle caused more lasting positive change in her body than anything else she’d experienced. Together they are the Collective!\nMichelle’s former gym – Tampa Movement Lab – pioneered the movement “movement” in Tampa Bay in 2016 (the idea that exercise is both for movement health and aesthetics). As technology became more advanced and more routine after the Covid shut down\, she sold her brick and mortar studio in 2024 to work with clients remotely. She received her Masters Degree in Human Performance in 2013 and has been working with clients and athletes since 2009. In the last 5 years\, she has been working primarily with clients with chronic joint pain and has worked closely with PT’s\, Chiros and OT’s with clients when they are post-operative and cleared for exercise.

DESCRIPTION:Clear the confusion and finally make the changes that make sense! \nWith so much nutrition information available\, it can be really confusing to know what might be best for you. I’ve invited a terrific colleague\, nutrition coach Colleen Baughn\, to present an engaging\, interactive 1-hour virtual workshop on the simple and sustainable changes you can make to use food to: \n\nIncrease your energy (without caffeine)\nImprove digestion (bye bye bloating)\nAnd\, optimize your body composition (without starving yourself) to get out and live your best life!\n\nNone of what will be shared subscribes to any specific “diet” or requires any kind of crazy supplement. Instead\, you will learn how to use the foods you are already eating (with just a few tweaks) to make lasting changes.  \nWe’re posting this workshop in the free nationwide group Finding Female Friends Past Fifty (FFF>50) on Mighty Networks. DESCRIPTION:A new year is a great time for a new start with habits that truly serve us and also feel good! \nBut all sorts of internal and external resistance can get in the way of our habit change\, even if the results will be both beneficial and enjoyable. That’s human nature! But fortunately it’s also human nature to be motivated and influenced by a friendly\, supportive group\, and that can make all the difference! \nAnd instead of the pushing or forcing ourselves that is so common with New Year’s resolutions\, we will \n\nCultivate loving self-compassion for our human habits and cravings (it feels better AND really helps us create change!)\nSupport each other unconditionally (shame-free zone!)\nFind more beneficial ways to satisfy and nurture ourselves in times of cravings\, stress\, etc.\nExplore new possibilities for fun\, joy\, play\, excitement and authenticity in our lives\nTune into and celebrate the positive changes we’re feeling\nTurn our minds to our beneficial intention and ask for strength and guidance from our inner wisdom and/or our Higher Power.\n\nAs Peter Black says in his book Community: The Structure of Belonging\, “once we imagine possibilities\, we don’t have to work on them – they work on us.”  \nIf this sounds good\, I hope you’ll join my January “Hug-Us” Reset!  Hug-Us stands for “Help Us Give Up Something” (thank you Barbara for the great idea!) \nWhat would you like to leave behind and gently and compassionately give up\, one day at a time\, in January? \n\nSugar?\nAlcohol?\nProcessed foods?\nComplaining?\nSocial media scrolling?\nEvening snacking?\nor ??? (see my blog post here for more ideas!)\n\nMyself\, I’ll be doing a Whole30 and also Dry January. I know some of the moments of craving will be tough\, and I’ll have to deal with logistics in shopping and cooking. But I also know that I’ll sleep better\, have more energy and ease in my body\, and support my long-term well-being! And when January ends\, I’ll feel more empowerment and ease about my future habit choices. \nDetails! \n\nWe’ll meet twice a week on Zoom (or hybrid at my home studio in Falls Church\, VA)\, on Wednesdays at 12:30 pm and Sundays at 1 pm Eastern\, from Jan. 1 through Jan. 29. Join one or both meetings!\nWe’ll also enjoy mutual support and community in a Hug-Us WhatsApp group (optional)\nYou’ll get a powerful (but optional) habit change workbook from me with journal prompts and other proven tools for positive change.\nI believe in affordability and accessibility\, so the group is just $120 for the entire program.\nOr harness the power of individual coaching by combining the group with 6 individual coaching sessions with me (starting the last week in Dec.\, then weekly in January scheduled at your convenience)\, for just $400!  Current coaching clients can add on the group for just $100.\nLimited to 10 people to ensure strong connections and effective personal support.\n\nLike everything else\, this program is not for everyone. DESCRIPTION:All year\, in the midst of a small forest\, we gather in our secret place\, a lovely clearing with benches amid the trees. As we feel the healing power of nature\, we activate the whole body to fun music (requests very welcome!) and move in beneficial ways that we may not do in daily life. We hardly know we’re “exercising” and we get an energy\, fitness\, music\, nature and friendship boost for the whole weekend!\n\nThis is an informal activity\, just for fun and to keep us all moving. Please email me to join\, and RSVP so I know how many are coming\, thank you and hope to see you!\n\nThere’s a donation button here but it is NOT expected\, just if ever you feel inspired 🙂  Note that I don’t have an official permit for “business” in the park so this is just a free and fun activity as part of my mission to get people moving and connected! SUMMARY:Getting Up to Pee\, What Can It Be?
DESCRIPTION:Do you get up more than once at night to use the bathroom? One time is still considered within the normal range\, but more than once is called nocturia\, and it deserves our attention. \nIf this sounds familiar\, please join me on Sunday\, Nov. 17 at 1 pm Pacific/4 pm Eastern on Zoom to investigate the causes and remedies! \nIt’s important to talk to your doctor about nocturia\, of course\, BUT there are also lots of modifiable\, non-medical reasons why this might be happening. \nFactors include pelvic floor weakness\, our habits\, and what/when we are drinking (in my case\, fizzy water was a culprit!). \nIn this interactive workshop\, we’ll investigate possible causes (which may be different for each person) and practice effective strategies and simple daily exercises that can help. \nIn my case\, I used to get up 2-3 times\, and now I’m down to 0-1! ? \nImportant: When signing up\, please also fill out my short questionnaire/waiver at this link\, thank you! \nWhat to bring: Please bring a squishy ball or cushion that you can squeeze between your thighs.
