SUMMARY:Falling more safely? Yes! Here's how! Free Zoom workshop
DESCRIPTION:Fall prevention is so important — but sometimes we do fall. When that happens\, people will fall resilience skills (like martial artists\, parachute jumpers\, skateboarders\, etc.) are more likely to emerge with fewer injuries\, or even catch themselves as they stumble and prevent the fall. \nLet’s learn some of these skills\, at whatever level is comfortable for each of us! \nNO need to fall on the floor in this workshop — you can gently crumple into a seated position on your chair\, or you might set up your phone/computer screen near a bed or sofa for careful practice if that works for you! \nWe’ll practice catching ourselves as we stumble\, and falling more gently by crumpling\, tucking and rolling into the fall (even practicing in a chair can build important reflexes that can help us in case of a fall!). \nNotes: \n\n\nOf course there is no way to prevent all injuries\, but these techniques can contribute to reducing our risk of serious injuries like concussion and broken bones. \n\n\nThese are not ideas that we learn once and “remember\,” but skills that we can intentionally practice to create helpful reflexes in the case of an unexpected fall. \n\n\nIf you have osteoporosis or orthopedic limitations\, you’ll stick to slow\, very low-impact demonstrations\, but these can still be helpful! \n\n\nLet me know if you have any questions! I’m a personal trainer and Functional Aging Specialist\, and along with several colleagues\, I’m excited to bring these cutting-edge skills to FFF>50 and the world! \nI’ve led this workshop in person numerous times at my county rec center\, a yoga studio and a Power Over Parkinson’s group\, and it has been very well-received. DESCRIPTION:Laughter Yoga has no yoga poses and no jokes — just gentle inspiration to “laugh on purpose” or “laugh for no reason.” \nLaughter brings us the benefits of exercise and even some more — stress relief and a sense of connection. If you don’t “feel like laughing\,” that’s when you can often benefit the most! \nIt’s a super-healthful (research-backed) practice which is also fun\, and you can participate according to your own comfort zone! (you are welcome to get a bit zany\, or not at all!) \nIt also includes some deep breathing and gentle movement. DESCRIPTION:Spring is here\, let’s hike!!  And we should see bluebells in bloom! \nI co-organized this event through the Washington DC chapter of Finding Female Friends > 50. \nJoin us at 10:30 am on Sunday\, April 12 at Riverbend Park\, 8700 Potomac Hills Street\, Great Falls\, Virginia. If you’d like a ride from the East Falls Church metro station please email me at patricia@fierceafter45.com\, thank you! \nNote that if it’s a gorgeous day\, the parking lot could be full. In that case we will pivot to a different hiking plan. Please be sure we have your cell number to coordinate in that case! \nWe will hike along the beautiful Potomac River to Great Falls and back (about 3 miles total). No\, that’s not a typo\, it’s a combination of walking and freestyle dancing that is stress-busting\, friendship-building\, creative\, healthy and inspiring. \nThis event is organized through Finding Female Friends > 50 (I’m the volunteer chapter lead for the DC area) but women below 50 are also cordially invited! \nWe collaborate on our favorite songs for the playlist\, walk and talk together and just move our bodies any way we want. “It’s so liberating!” as one of the participants said last time. \nWANCE began in the Midwest during the pandemic and we were excited to bring it to Washington DC. DESCRIPTION:It’s hidden in a private area of the body. But it’s so important to our quality of life\, in the bathroom\, bedroom and beyond! \nLet’s reduce or even stop leaks and other issues by getting to know and care for our dear pelvic floor in this lighthearted but impactful 1-hour workshop. \nPlease fill out my quick waiver and questionnaire (click here) when signing up. It mentions donations but they are truly optional. I appreciate anyone who attends\, donation or no! ? \nWe’ll practice together: \n– Breathing in a way that nourishes these often-tight muscles\, and as an extra bonus\, it also helps with posture and back pain! \n– Tuning in and sending care and appreciation to this neglected body part. \n– Doing Kegel exercises in an optimal way (most people’s technique is a bit off). \n– Bracing the pelvic floor\, which helps stop leaks and protects us when lifting a bag of mulch or a child 🙂 \n– Adding an inner-thigh squeeze to strengthen the pelvic floor (bring a cushion or soft ball if you have one!) \nPlus I’ll sing my “Pelvic Name Game” song at the end! \nWhat to bring: Please have a squishy ball or cushion that you can squeeze between your thighs. \nEven though I’m in the health/fitness field\, I didn’t know how to train my pelvic floor effectively (except “do Kegels”?) until June 2023. SUMMARY:How to Reduce Low Back Pain at Home: Zoom Workshop with Guest Trainer!
DESCRIPTION:Our low back takes the brunt of stress over time from stiffness and weakness from other joints like the shoulders and hips \nBut the good news is that chronic low back pain does not always mean we need medical treatments like cortisone shots\, surgeries or other medications. You can start reducing back pain\, freeing up your joints and moving better with exercises right in the comfort of your own home! \nJoin me for this event and learn how\, from Michelle Richards\, a highly experienced personal trainer (in person and online) and a movement coach who specializes in teaching people how to move pain-free\, especially women over 50. \nOne of my health coaching clients\, a woman over 50\, told me that her sessions with Michelle caused more lasting positive change in her body than anything else she’d experienced. When I met Michelle\, I understood why (and also loved her as a person)\, and I was excited that she accepted my invitation to present this session\, which we are also offering to the Finding Female Friends Past 50 free nationwide group. \nRegister by filling out Michelle’s form here. \nA recording will be sent to all registered participants in case you can not make it to the live session\, so please register even if you are not sure you can join. They specialize in customized nutrition coaching\, customized workout plans (or what they call movement plans)\, virtual personal training and health/life coaching! Michelle is the Movement Coach and her colleague Colleen Baugh\, an Occupational Therapist\, is the Nutrition Coach. Together they are the Collective!\nMichelle’s former gym – Tampa Movement Lab – pioneered the movement “movement” in Tampa Bay in 2016 (the idea that exercise is both for movement health and aesthetics). As technology became more advanced and more routine after the Covid shut down\, she sold her brick and mortar studio in 2024 to work with clients remotely. She received her Masters Degree in Human Performance in 2013 and has been working with clients and athletes since 2009. In the last 5 years\, she has been working primarily with clients with chronic joint pain and has worked closely with PT’s\, Chiros and OT’s with clients when they are post-operative and cleared for exercise.

DESCRIPTION:Clear the confusion and finally make the changes that make sense! \nWith so much nutrition information available\, it can be really confusing to know what might be best for you. I’ve invited a terrific colleague\, nutrition coach Colleen Baughn\, to present an engaging\, interactive 1-hour virtual workshop on the simple and sustainable changes you can make to use food to: \n\nIncrease your energy (without caffeine)\nImprove digestion (bye bye bloating)\nAnd\, optimize your body composition (without starving yourself) to get out and live your best life!\n\nNone of what will be shared subscribes to any specific “diet” or requires any kind of crazy supplement. Instead\, you will learn how to use the foods you are already eating (with just a few tweaks) to make lasting changes.  \nWe’re posting this workshop in the free nationwide group Finding Female Friends Past Fifty (FFF>50) on Mighty Networks.
